    UCAS EMPLOYEE LEAVE POLICY

    POLICY GD

Medical Leave is to be taken for illness, surgery, or recuperative purposes that make it impossible for the employee to complete their assigned duties. Sick Leave, Bereavement Leave, and Personal Leave are available to salaried UCAS employees only. Employees who are paid hourly for the majority of their pay are not eligible. The Leave benefits take effect beginning the first contract day of each school year and is non-transferable.

    1. Sick Leave
Employees will be granted up to twelve sick days each year. For part-time teachers this means twelve part-time school days per year. Sick leave is accruable to up to thirty days and can be cashed out at 20%of the cost of a substitute for a full day upon termination of employment from UCAS.

    2. Bereavement Leave
Employees may be granted up to five days of bereavement leave each year for the death of a spouse, child, grandchild, sibling, parent, or grandparent. For part-time teachers this means five part-time school days per year.

    3. Personal Leave
Employees will be granted up to three Personal Leave Days each year. These days will be at no cost to the employee but are not cumulative from year to year. For part-time teachers this means three part-time school days per year. Employees who request Personal Leave days in excess of the three per year understand that they may lose their pay for the days missed beyond the three approved. Exceptions for extenuating circumstances may be requested.

    4. Professional Development Leave
Professional Development Leave must be approved by the principal and will not be considered personal leave days. Professional Development days will count toward the total number of days in the salary agreement typically 185 for salaried employees.

    5. Unpaid Family and Medical Leave
Unpaid Family and Medical Leave, in accordance with the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993, may be granted to employees who have worked for at least one year for UCAS. Employees on family or medical leave shall be returned to their same position at no reduction of pay. Family Medical Leave may be granted for up to twelve weeks for the following reasons:
    a. to care for the employee’s child after birth, or placement for adoption or foster care
    b. to care for the employee’s spouse, children, or parent, who has a serious health condition
    c. for a serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform their job.

    6. Unpaid Leave
Regular Unpaid Leave may be granted to hourly, temporary, and part time non-salaried employees for illness, bereavement, personal reasons, and emergencies. When Unpaid Leave is approved by the principal, the employee is not paid for the day and there are no additional negative consequences for missing a day of work. The school will cover the cost of a substitute employee if one is required. Requests for Unpaid Leave should be made using a Leave Request Form. All other leave (military, civic, jury, ecclesiastical, etc.) will be considered unpaid leave unless approved by the Principal to be otherwise or unless mandated by current state code.

The official Leave Request Form should be used anytime an employee requests time off from work. If Leave is approved but the day requested is more than the maximum allowed, the principal will indicate if the employee will be charged for a substitute, docked a day of pay, or held harmless for the day missed.
